I saw the photos of these rolls online and couldn't wait to make them. There were a bit of a process and somewhat time consuming, but they sure are tasty. They are best while still warm.
Ingredients:
Rolls:
1 (1/4 ounce) packet active dry yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
1 egg yolk, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup orange juice
2 tablespoon vegetable shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cup flour, plus more for surface
3 tablespoons warm water
Filling:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon orange zest
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/9 teaspoon cardamom
Preparation:
1. Mix warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar in a small bowl. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
2. Beat egg yolk, orange juice, vegetable shortening, salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Switch mixer to dough hook.
3. Add yeast mixture and flour. Mix until dough forms.
4. Knead out dough several times on a floured surface until smooth.
5. Spray a large bowl with nonstick spray. Place dough in bowl and turn to coat. Cover with a clean towel and let sit in a warm place for dough to rise for about 45 minutes.
6. While dough is rising, make filling. Beat butter, sugar, orange zest, salt and cardamom together. Set aside.
7. Spray a 12-cup muffin pan with nonstick spray. Roll dough out on a well floured surface until it is about an 1/8" thick and is in a rectangle about 14x14". Spread evenly filling over dough.
8. Starting on a long side of the rectangle, roll dough into a tight cylinder. Refridgerate for 10-15 minutes.
9. Cut into 12 equal pieces. Place, cut side up, in muffin cups. Cover with a towel and let sit in a warm place to rise, about 30 minutes.
10. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake rolls until lightly browned on top, 15-18 minutes. Let cool in pan for 3-4 minutes. Remove promptly by inverting onto a plate to serve.
