We go apple picking every year, and I love using the apples for a wide variety of meals, sauces, and desserts. A few of my favorites are Apple Carrot Soup, Apple Crisp, and Apple Cole Slaw. I always like to try something different every year, so why not BBQ sauce?
Ingredients:
2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/8 cup molasses
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon hickory Liquid Smoke
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
1/2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
salt and pepper
3 large apples, unpeeled and cut into large wedges to remove the core
Preparation:
1. Heat grill to medium. Cook apples, flipping once, until cooked through. This should take about 5 minutes.
2. Place apples in a small food processor and blend until smooth.
3. In a medium sauce pan, combine all ingredients, including pureed smoked apples. Simmer over medium, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens. This takes about 20 minutes.
4. Use sauce immediately or let cool and refrigerate in an airtight container.
